Demand for Cosmetic Surgery Remains High

"I saw my dad, who is 35 years older than me, and he has this huge jiggly thing hanging down and I didn't want that happening to me, so I pre-empted that," he says. (He asked to remain anonymous because of the stigma surrounding plastic surgery). "I've been self-conscious about my fat face all my life. My double chin just added to my baby face because it rounded out at the bottom. But now I have a jaw. I feel normal."

As Our Skin Sags With Age, So Do Our Bones

To figure out why so many people with face-lifts look "windswept" instead of youthful, Langstein and a colleague, medical resident Dr. Robert Shaw, collected three-dimensional CT scans of the skulls of about 60 adults. The idea was to look deep beneath the sagging skin and soft tissue, and focus instead on the underlying bone. When they grouped the scans according to age — young, middle age, and 65 and older— and took careful measurements of the various dimensions of the face, a pattern emerged: It's not just skin that droops with age, they discovered. Facial bones shift and wither with time, too...

Bad cosmetic surgery.... gone good!

We've all shrieked with horror while standing in line at the market or during an awards show: "What did she DO to her face?" Or breasts. Or butt, for that matter. In fact, it seems that there's as much bad cosmetic work on display as good- which surely makes us all think twice before going under the knife. The best plan, of course, is to take all precautions in finding an excellent surgeon the first time out. Pay careful attention to his/her approach- is it conservative, over-the-top, or somewhere in between? And while the surgeon will certainly show you his/her very best work, pictures don’t lie: skillfully amended noses trump scary scoops every time...

Turning back time with surgery

One lift, tuck or suction at a time, cosmetic surgery has been improving appearances and boosting self-esteem for decades. Once seemingly reserved for the rich and famous, retaining youth is now a widespread trend. And it's not just boob jobs and facelifts any more. More men than ever are having cosmetic surgery, and the dim economy is creating buzz about less-invasive, more cost-effective options. Here, three East Coast plastic surgeons discuss these emerging trends and answer important questions those contemplating going under the knife may be asking. And one desperate twenty-something from the West Coast explains why a tummy tuck is more important to him than being tucked into a warm bed...
